Game save problems: a safe troubleshooting checklist

The save is not appearing

First confirm that the save was placed in the location expected by the destination installation.

• Check the folder path.
• Confirm the file was actually copied.
• Check that the filename was not changed accidentally.
• Confirm the game is looking at the expected profile or save location.

The game refuses to load the save

Do not repeatedly overwrite the file. First restore the original backup and determine whether the issue is related to version, platform, file integrity, or location.

The save worked before an update

Version changes can introduce compatibility differences. If the problem appeared immediately after an update, compare the version used when the save was created with the version currently installed.

The copied file looks smaller or different

Stop the transfer process and compare the copied file with the original backup. A partially copied or corrupted file should not replace the known-good version.

Work through one variable at a time

Changing the installation, version, filename, save location, and multiple files simultaneously makes it difficult to determine what actually fixed the problem.

Instead, change one thing, test it, and record the result. If it fails, return to the known-good backup before trying the next step.

When to stop experimenting

If the original save still works, protect it. There is little value in risking the only functioning copy while trying increasingly speculative fixes.

Create a separate working copy and use that for experimentation.
